Thanks for your question. The gauge is measureing the cam profile itself. Thus you can measure working angle, lift height, and so on. In addition, this gives you a chance to measure V/P (clearance between valve and piston) and V/V (clearance between inlet valve and ex valve) as well.
More you tune up the engine, more taking care of those circumstances around valve train gets necessary.
